Degrees/Certificates Overview

At Southwestern Michigan College you can choose a program that leads to one of three Associate degrees, a certificate in a specialized field or you may wish to take selected courses only.

Southwestern Michigan College is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Associate in Arts (AA) (Transfer)

The Associate in Arts degree is primarily designed as the equivalent of the first half of a Baccalaureate degree in non-science areas.

Associate in Science (AS) (Transfer)

The Associate in Science degree is primarily designed as the equivalent of the first half of a Baccalaureate degree in science areas.

Associate in Applied Science (AAS) (Occupational)

The Associate in Applied Science degree is designed to prepare you to immediately enter the workforce or advance your career with specific occupational skills.

Certificate Programs

In addition to Associate degrees, SMC offers certificate programs. Numerous certificate programs are offered in career areas and are designed to develop or enhance employment skills. The certificate program can usually be completed in one year. These certificates are designed so you can continue on to the AAS degree without loss of earned credit.

Specialty Certificates\Credential Programs

Specialty credentials are designed to prepare a student to enter the workforce with a specific occupational skill learned in less than one year.
