You might be surprised at how easily and inexpensively you can earn your bachelor’s degree at Southwestern Michigan College. The collaborative program between SMC and Ferris State University allows students to apply up to three years of SMC courses toward a bachelor’s degree from FSU in Accountancy, Business Administration, Business Administration – Professional Track, Computer Information Systems, and Human Resource Management.

Through Ferris’s School of Education, you have a choice of two master’s degrees. Both programs have optional concentrations attractive to educators and non-educators alike. With either master’s degree, you can advance your professional development to the next level.

Ferris State University has an office in SMC’s University Center, located on the first floor of the Dale A. Lyons Building, Room 139A, at the Dowagiac campus.

Students are encouraged to make an appointment with Ferris State University advisor before registering for classes. Transfer subjects may change. Financial aid is available for students who may be eligible.

Bachelor's Degrees

Bachelor of Science Degree in Accountancy

The Accountancy major integrates a liberal arts foundation with a professional field of study. Graduates are prepared for positions in public accounting, private/industrial accounting, governmental/nonprofit accounting and accounting education.

Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration

The Business Administration major at Ferris provides an avenue for immediate employment and for advancement to upper levels of management. Graduates of the program obtain positions in manufacturing, retailing, construction, financial institutions, government and host of other fields.

Bachelor's of Science in Degree Business Administration - Professional Track

SMC and Ferris have merged two types of degrees into one. Students can start by earning a certificate or an associate degree in their occupational field of interest through SMC.

Then, a student can either continue to work in their concentrated field of study or finish their education by taking the necessary classes to earn this specialized business degree from Ferris. This program appeals to people who would like to start working in their field quickly and then continue on to receive a business degree.

Bachelor's of Science Degree in Computer Information Systems

The Computer Information Systems major provides an avenue for immediate employment in an area that is becoming increasingly essential to all aspects of business. Graduates of the program are prepared for positions as computer programmers, programmer/analyst, systems analysis, network administrators or microcomputer specialists.

Bachelor's of Science in Degree in Human Resource Management

This major prepares students for careers in human resources. As a student, you have the opportunity to develop expertise in human resource management through courses in employment law, compensation, negotiations, and international human resource management.

Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Information Technology

The bachelor’s of science in computer information technology mixes industry certification with a four-year degree. The computer information technology program is different than the computer information systems degree currently offered at SMC through Ferris. The new degree has a security emphasis and requires an internship to complete the degree. SMC also requires an internship to finish the associate in applied science degree in computer information systems. This degree offers similar classes as the computer information systems degree but adds an administrative component the current degree does not have. Those classes include Linux+ administration, Security+ administration, PC repair, IT support, Novell Networking, Windows Networking, and UNIX. Both the CIT and CIS degrees require a number of business courses.

Certificates

Human Resource Management Certificate

This certificate provides an opportunity for students in any major to gain the basic knowledge and skills in the field of human resources required of supervisors and managers in all areas of an organization.

International Business Certificate

Corporate executives across the United States stress that college graduates entering careers in business need to acquire global skills. This certificate will give you the global business skills that corporations seek. This certificate can be earned in conjunction with the Business Administration BS degree.

Master's Degrees

Master's Degree in Career and Technical Education

Three concentrations are offered under the Master of Science in Career and Technical Education program at Ferris State University at SMC. Each option offers a range of career and technical educational opportunities for people currently working in education, business, health sciences, human services, management, marketing and technology fields.

The Career and Technical Education concentrations are:

The program is designed for people who want to refine their instructional and administrative skills while building on their previous training and occupational experience. Candidates for the program must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Employment opportunities include:

  • Department heads, faculty and administration at a community college or university levels
  • Vocational teachers who want to further their teaching skills and competency, while enhancing their subject-area expertise
  • Teachers who want to enhance their educational technology skills

Master's Degree in Education

The Master’s of Education Degree from Ferris State University in Curriculum and Instruction offers two program options on the campus of SMC. Courses are offered in the evenings, weekends and online for the convenience of working students.

The Subject Area Option allows certified teachers to complete their 18-semester-hour program and earn a master’s degree. It is designed for teachers who want to further develop their teaching skills and competence, and to enhance their subject area expertise.

The Administrative Option is designed for certified teachers seeking an educational administration background to qualify for a position as principal, assistant principal or curriculum director.
