Master’s Degree Programs
Through Ferris’s College of Education and Human Services program, you have a choice of two master degrees offered on SMC campuses. Both programs have optional concentrations, attractive to educators and non-educators alike. With either degree, you can advance your professional development to the next level.
Master of Science in Career and Technical Education
Five concentrations are offered under the Master of Science in Career and Technical Education program at Ferris State University of SMC campuses. Each option offers a range of career and technical educational opportunities for people currently working in education, business, health sciences, human services, management, marketing and technology fields.
The Career and Technical Education concentrations are:
- Training and Development Concentration
- Postsecondary Administration Concentration
- Instructor Concentration
- Educational Technology Concentration
- Administrative Concentration
The program is designed for people who want to refine their instructional and administrative skills while building on their previous training and occupational experience. Candidates for the program must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Employment opportunities include:
- Training and development field of business or industry
- Department heads, faculty and administration at a community college or university levels
- Vocational teachers who want to further their teaching skills and competency, while enhancing their subject-area expertise
- Teachers who want to enhance their educational technology skills
Master in Education
The Master’s of Education Degree from Ferris State University offers two program options on the campus of SMC. Courses are offered in the evenings, weekends and online for the convenience of working students.
The Subject Area Option allows certified teachers to complete their 18-semester-hour program and earn a master’s degree. It is designed for teachers who want to further develop their teaching skills and competence, and to enhance their subject area expertise.
The Administrative Option is designed for certified teachers seeking an educational administration background to qualify for a position as principal, assistant principal or curriculum director.

Ferris State University has an office in The University Center located on the first floor of the Dale A. Lyons Building, Room 139, on the Dowagiac Campus of Southwestern Michigan College.
