Student Services Overview
Students at Southwestern Michigan College have various services to make their educational experience a success. Students can access these services at both the Dowagiac campus and the Niles Area Campus. Several student services are also available online, through this web site or in the self-service area of the campus portal, SMC Wired.
Some of these services include the SMC Bookstore, the EXCEL Student Support Services, career services through the Office of Work-Based Learning and the online Career Resource Center, the Fred L. Mathews Library and Conference Center, Special Population Services, the Registration and Record Office, the Teaching and Learning Center and Tutoring Services.
The SMC Bookstore carries all required textbooks, as well as other school supplies and SMC apparel. The bookstore is physically located in the College Services Building on the Dowagiac Campus but offers shopping online as well.
The EXCEL program encourages students through various supportive services such as tutoring and their laptop loaner program so that they will graduate from SMC and transfer to a four-year college or university.
The office of Work-Based Learning connects job seekers and employers together to create staffing solutions that benefit both. SMC also offers an online Career Resource Center that provides tips for writing a resume, interviewing skills and more.
The Fred L. Mathews Library and Conference Center offers a complete listing of books, periodicals and audio-visual materials used to support the instructional programs at the college. A complete catalog of library resources is available online. In addition, several online databases are available for student use through SMC Wired.
The Special Populations office provides support and accommodations to eligible students with physical, learning or other types of disabilities.
The Registration and Records Office maintains student records; issues transcripts; issues diplomas; supervises registration and Veterans Affairs; and records grades.
SMC’s three Teaching and Learning Centers support student success through free tutoring services in all academic subjects, learning style and learning strategy assessments and study groups. The TLC also offers “Stretch Beyond Workshops” which are divided into several areas including life management, library skills, learning support, and physical activities designed specifically for faculty, staff and students of SMC.
