International Student Costs and Expenses

The cost of living and other expenses will vary while you are here at Southwestern Michigan College. However, a general estimate of yearly expenses (two semesters) for an unmarried student is shown on this page. The costs are in U.S. dollars.

Financial Responsibility

U.S. schools are required by law to get written proof that international applicants have financial resources to pay their expenses while attending school.

Southwestern Michigan College must be certain that funds will be on hand and are fully documented for at least the first year of study.

U.S. Immigration places strict limitations on all work opportunities and working without United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) approval immediately puts the student out of status with Immigration with no opportunity for reinstatement.

Medical Insurance

International students are required to buy medical (health) insurance covering their stay while at Southwestern Michigan College. Contact the SMC's International Student Advisor for more information.

* This price is based on 15 contact hours per semester.

** Based on $100.00 per class, 5 classes a semester for two semesters. Some courses in specialty areas require textbook and supplies that will be more expensive.

*** Living expenses are calculated for 12 months because we find that our international students often remain in the U.S. during the summer.
