Campus Life Overview
Welcome to campus life at Southwestern Michigan College, where students can explore their artistic, cultural, and athletic aspirations on our beautiful 240-acre Dowagiac campus with more than six miles of wooded cross country trails for year-round enjoyment.
Students will find SMC’s new dormitory suites, scheduled to open Fall 2009, an attractive addition to the Dowagiac campus. The dorms will feature everything a student needs to feel safe and at ease from the minute they arrive on campus.
SMC’s Student Activity Center (SAC), the hub for sports and recreational opportunities on campus, features a fitness center, gymnasium and racquetball courts, as well as a Student Lounge complete with a big screen TV and video and arcade games.
For students who want to explore cultural and artistic avenues, the Dowagiac campus features an art gallery, performing arts theatre, museum and the Fred L. Mathews Library. Students may audition for a role in one of the SMC’s theatre productions or perform in any number of music or dance concerts held each semester.
In addition, students will find self-expression by writing for the Southwester, SMC’s campus newspaper, or displaying their work in the student art show. Also students will find a number of clubs and organizations which provide an opportunity to socialize with others who have similar interests.
Hungry? Then, the Birdfeeder Cafeteria offers a full, breakfast and lunch menu, as well as salads, daily specials and homemade soups.
The SMC’s Dowagiac and Niles Area campuses have several “hotspots” for Wi-Fi wireless capabilities, as well as Internet Café workstations and kiosks in several locations on both campuses.
In addition to the kiosks and Internet Café workstations, SMC offers students access to computers in the Teaching and Learning Center located in the College Services Building, Fred L. Mathews Library and at the Niles Area Campus.
Campus life is big part of any student’s college experience. We at SMC are planning to enhance that experience by offering on-campus living experience and an expanded Student Activity Center by Fall 2009, making SMC more than a typical two-year college.
