Dance
The dance program at Southwestern Michigan College offers many opportunities for both recreational students and Dance majors interested in pursuing a career in the dance field. A full range of technique classes in ballet, jazz, modern, and tap are offered, as well as classes in dance theory and appreciation. Dance satisfies SMC life fitness and wellness requirement.
Performance opportunities include casual dance showings, formal dance concerts, and musical theatre productions in the Fine and Performing Arts Department. Dancers may audition for the Southwestern Michigan College Dance Ensemble, which is the performance group where students work on dance repertory for performances both on and off campus. Each semester, this popular group presents an informal lunchtime showing called Dance Café, as well as a formal dance concert showcasing student, guest artist and faculty choreography. Student choreography is always encouraged; each Spring student works are featured in the Choreographers Showcase.
All new incoming students attend a dance placement audition prior to their first semester so they can be advised for registration in the proper level dance class based on their experience.

Teaching Philosophy
"Through dance my goal is to help students develop physical, intellectual, and artistic skills by providing high quality educational instruction and experiences. Regardless of whether students are involved in dance for career preparation or recreation, each should be encouraged to reach their fullest potential in a non-competitive learning environment where the joy of dance is shared and encouraged."
~ Beth LaBaren-Root
