Visual Arts - Fine Arts
Welcome. The art department at SMC is a great place to begin your professional education. The 11 instructors that make up our faculty of are all practicing artists with long careers in teaching. Our department combines high expectations in a close-knit environment so you won't get lost. Our art students have transferred to every major university and art school in the region. If you do well here you'll have a smooth transfer and do well wherever you go.
SMC offers foundations courses required of art majors everywhere. These are 2-D Design, Beginning and Advanced Drawing, and the 2-semester Art History sequence. We have additional art courses in Painting, Watercolor, Ceramics, Photography, Glass Blowing and Graphic Design.

David Baker |
David Baker received his B.S. in Art Education from Western Michigan University and his M.F.A. in Painting from Indiana State University. Mr. Baker arrived at Southwestern in 1981 after eight years of public school teaching. His teaching duties at SMC include Drawing, Painting, Watercolor, Design and Art Appreciation. Recently, while working on a watercolor painting of the Dowagiac Creek at Russ Forest County Park, Mr. Baker came up with an idea to paint the Dowagiac Creek every place that a road crossed the creek. Three months and 24 paintings later, Mr. Baker completed his "Hidden Waters: Discovering the Dowagiac Creek" series for exhibition at Water Street Glassworks in Benton Harbor and at the Museum at Southwestern Michigan College. Mr. Baker is represented by Vesuvius Gallery, Glenn, Michigan. |
