Theatre Overview
Southwestern Michigan College’s Theatre program offers students special emphasis on performance for the live stage, as well as having various courses that can enhance all aspects of student development.
The SMC Theatre program offers many opportunities for students interested in the foundation they will need to either transfer to a four-year university, or to pursue a career in theatre arts. SMC offers productions each year for majors and non-majors alike. Within the confines of the courses, SMC Theatre program also provides students with the chance to work with guest artists.

Thom Cooper |
Thom Cooper is a Michigan native, raised in Jackson. It was there that he developed his love for the arts. Thom graduated from Lumen Christi High School having been involved in band, choir, and drama. Cooper went to Kellogg Community College and earned his Associate of Arts. While there he performed in numerous shows including “42nd Street,” “Fiddler on the Roof” and “The Odd Couple.” Cooper continued his education at Western Michigan University, earning a bachelor degree with emphasis in theatre education, English education, and theatre performance. While at WMU he was fortunate to have the opportunity to take “The Scarlet Letter” to the American College Theatre Festival in Columbus, Ohio. After college Cooper taught three years at Kalamazoo Central High School. It was there that he was the director of Theatre as well as teaching English. Coaching forensics and debate were also part of his job duties. Each spring, Cooper took a group of students to Mackinaw Island for the Michigan Speech Coaches for the annual tournament. In his time away from SMC, Cooper lives in Kalamazoo with his wife Tammy. He is an active board member of the Paw Paw Village Players. Cooper also performs in shows in Paw Paw. Along with his duties at SMC, Cooper is the publicist and marketing assistant at Miller Auditorium. |
