Visual Arts Overview
Southwestern Michigan College’s visual arts department features 11 faculty members in eight well-equipped studios. Students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in fine arts or art education can complete their first two years at SMC.
In addition to their foundation courses in drawing, design and art history, students may elect to take painting, ceramics, figure drawing, photography, watercolor, and even glass blowing and welding.
SMC’s graphic design program has the option of a two-year Associate in Applied Science degree with an occupational specialty, or a two-year Associate in Arts degree, which will allow students to transfer to a four-year school for a bachelor’s degree. To find out more about bachelor's degree opportunities, follow the link on this page to the University Center. The graphic design curriculum includes training in digital illustration, digital publishing, graphic design, typography, Web page design, digital photography and digital animation.
