Federal Parent PLUS Loan

This is a non-need based source of loan funds available to parents of dependent students who are enrolled for 6 or more credits per semester. In this program, the parent is the borrower, a credit check is performed on the applicant, and repayment of interest and principal must begin within 60 days of disbursement of the loan. Parents may borrow up to the student’s cost of attendance (COA) minus other financial aid.

Parent PLUS Loan Process

To apply for a Parent PLUS Loan, follow these steps:

  1. Submit the student Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form for the current year and complete student's financial aid file at SMC.
  2. Student must meet SMC's Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy.
  3. Complete and submit the Federal Parent Loan (PLUS) Request Form.
  4. Complete Federal PLUS Loan Entrance Counseling .
  5. Sign the required Federal PLUS Loan Master Promissory Note.
