Steve's Run - Fire Up!

Steven Briegel

Dear Steve’s Runners and Walkers:

Steve’s Run is a special run (or walk) which is held on the original Road ‘n Trail course that starts and finishes in downtown Dowagiac. This popular course is always a big hit and the event will again be conducted in conjunction with the Dowagiac Summer Fun Fest.

Dowagiac, Michigan is located in the scenic resort area of southwestern Michigan and is 30 minutes north of South Bend/Mishawaka/Notre Dame and 45 minutes east of the beautiful sunset coast of Lake Michigan.

The venue will include the Dowagiac streetscape and the beautiful Victorian restoration of downtown. The races will run in the memory of Steven Briegel and all funds that are raised, including 100 percent of the pledge money, will be donated equally (unless otherwise noted) to the Mayo Clinic Cancer Research and/or the Steven Briegel Scholarship Fund which assists outstanding students (3.0 or better). I hope that you can join us.

Steven Briegel

Steven Briegel was a 1988 honors graduate of SMC who died of cancer in 1990 after a courageous and determined fight. Steve was an avid sports enthusiast both as an athlete and a fan. He loved the Spartans, Tigers, Pistons, Lions and the SMC Roadrunners and he served as an announcer for Roadrunner athletic events. He was also a student assistant in the office of the Dean of Sports Education for four years and among his many tasks was the computing of championship pace charts for the nationally ranked distance teams.

Steve’s enthusiasm for life and his indefatigable spirit and strength will always serve as a source of inspiration and bravery for all those who knew him.

Steve was presented his Associate’s Degree in Arts with honors by his father, David C. Briegel. Briegel served as president of SMC from 1981 to 1998. President Emeritus Briegel and Steve’s mother, Camille, are both avid runners.
