Parent's Resource Guide
Introduction to SMC
A Time for Transition for Parents, Too
When your student begins college, you go through a transition too. Some of the control you had over your child while in high school seems elusive now. He or she develops new friends, new relationships with adults, and new ideas as a result of exposure to a different culture through the classroom and on campus.
Because of The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) you can’t call and talk to someone about your student’s academic progress without written consent. So not only does college feel very different for your student, it’s very different for you.
We’ve written this guide to help you understand this new environment. We don’t want to take your place in the life of your student—no one can love a child as well as a parent. But we do take responsibility for the experience your student has while attending SMC, and the more you know, the more you can help us make this experience the best it can be. We would like to be your partners in helping your student achieve academic and personal success. Will you join us?
