Business and Industry Overview
Business and industry training services are offered through the Michigan Technical Education Center (MTEC) located on the Niles Area Campus. MTEC is designed as a workforce development training center through SMC’s Division of Advanced Technologies. As part of SMC’s Division of Advanced Technologies and industry-based trade associations, the M-TEC facility provides the latest technological advances in manufacturing through development and training programs and curriculum.
The Division of Advanced Technology combines college credit and industrial credentialing that can lead to a one-year certificate or an Associate in Applied Science or an Associate in Applied Science in Occupational Technology degree. The courses are developed and taught by certified instructors who follow national standards.
The training and educational opportunities at MTEC include modularized courses, flexible scheduling and seminars – all designed to give employers a competitive advantage in an increasingly complex marketplace. Candidates for the training programs include non-traditional students, employees of area manufacturers, and students/employees from area high schools. Training can take place at M-TECSM or at the business’s site. SMC’s Internship and Apprenticeship programs offer students and employers an effective partnership between business and education.
The facility was possible through the cooperative efforts of SMC, the Michigan Department of Economic Development and Michigan Works!, as well as area manufacturers, industry leaders and the state of Michigan.
MTEC also supports area industrial companies and machine manufacturers, as well as trade associations, as a satellite training facility for the development of specific skill sets for business and industry.
The faculty and staff at the MTEC facility are responsible for providing pre-occupational skills training for the area workforce, customized training and retraining programs for area companies and small business consulting services to area entrepreneurs.
In addition, they can help individuals and organizations adapt to and manage change through new training perspectives. A major goal of the of the MTEC facility is assist area business and industry in creating job opportunities and expanding the occupational skills of area workforce through partnerships with business, government and non-profit organizations.
The MTEC facility also promotes business and corporate activities to facilitate the development of training content to address the needs of area employers and to enhance economic growth.
