Small Town, Big World: Locals Who Made History

Opening this June in the Museum at Southwestern Michigan College, “It’s a Big World: Locals Who Made History.” This new exhibit is an interactive adventure exploring the lives and accomplishments of area residents who made a significant impact on the world. Some of the people featured include:

Leigh Wade of Cassopolis, pilot of one of the plans on the first Around the World flight

  • Journalist Webb Miller wrote about major events as they occurred
  • Iven Carl Kincheloe broke the altitude record in 1956
  • Leigh Wade (pictured at right) piloted one of the planes on the first Flight Around the World
  • Charles Smith was an early African-American industrial entrepreneur
  • Edward Lowe invented Kitty Litter and led an entrepreneurial life that still influences many lives
  • James Heddon’s fishing lures influenced generations of anglers
  • Eleanor Colby’s drawings inspired many citizens to pursue the arts
  • A tribute to many of the area’s citizen soldiers who answered the nation’s call to arms in time of war

This exhibit will include hundreds of artifacts and additional interactive exhibits to help visitors understand the lives of these individuals, their inventions and how they lived in their times to influence the world.
