Freshman Orientation FAQ's
WHY SHOULD I ATTEND FRESHMAN ORIENTATION?
All incoming SMC freshmen are encouraged to attend Freshman Orientation. Freshman Orientation provides new students and their families the opportunity to become familiar with Southwestern Michigan College. Students can choose from a variety of sessions, tailoring their experience to their personal academic needs and questions. Freshman Orientation allows students to start strong so that they can get the most out of their college experience.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
There is no cost for students to attend. A free lunch will be provided! Bring money if you wish to purchase some SMC gear from the Bookstore or if you would like a latte at our Café.
DO I NEED TO RSVP?
We appreciate RSVPs.
WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING TO FRESHMAN ORIENTATION?
We will supply you with a notebook and pen for taking notes. There will be a lot of information and tips that you will want to write down. We also recommend that you wear comfortable clothing and shoes as you will be walking around a lot.
CAN PARENTS ATTEND FRESHMAN ORIENTATION?
Yes! Your parents are invited. In fact we encourage you to bring a parent or mentor as we know that having a support system can be vital for the success of a first semester student. Your parent can attend all the sessions with you. Also, we do have a special “Parents Only” session which will happen at the same time as the student sessions. If your parent attends this session, he or she will have an easy time rejoining you as you will be in the same building.
I CAN’T MAKE IT THAT DAY! WHAT SHOULD I DO?
While we highly recommend that all freshmen attend orientation, we do understand that you may have other obligations. If you cannot attend, please be sure to stop into the Student Service Center on either campus if you have questions or need help with something. Our mission is to see that you have all the resources and information you need to succeed.
WHAT IF I’M NOT REGISTERED FOR CLASSES?
Come anyway—even if you haven’t registered yet—we will help you register for fall classes. Please bring any high school or college transcripts with you and/or ACT/SAT scores. If you need placement testing, we can help you do that also. If you would prefer to be a registered student before this event, please call 269-782-1499 and we can make that happen!
