Wait-lists
Wait-lists are available to provide better service to students who wish to enroll in closed/full sections. Wait-lists are created only if all sections of a course are full.
Wait-list FAQ's
- What is a wait-list? A wait-list is an official list of students waiting for a seat in a class.
- How do I know if a wait-list is available for a certain class/section/CRN? The online schedule WL CAP heading for the class indicates the Wait-list Capacity (maximum number of wait-list seats). If this is zero then a wait-list is not available for the class/section. The WL Act (actual students on wait-list) heading indicates the number of students currently wait-listed for the class and the WL Rem (remaining available seats on wait-list) indicates the number of available wait-listed seats remaining for the class.
- How do I request a wait-list be created for a class? Contact an Academic Support Advisor at (269) 782-1303.
- How do I get on a wait-list? Contact an Academic Support Advisor at (269) 782-1303. Students are placed on a wait-list as first come, first serve basis.
- Will I be charged for the wait-listed class? No. When you are placed on a wait-list, you will not be charged for the class. If a seat opens in the class, you will automatically be enrolled in the class if your name is at the top of the list. At that time, you will be charged tuition and fees for the class.
- How will I know if I am registered for the class I was wait-listed for? You will be sent a copy of your schedule with the class highlighted. It is very important that you maintain a current mailing address with SMC's Registration and Records Office. You can also check your registration through SMC Self Service. Please check your class schedule prior to classes beginning for accuracy.
- What happens if a seat does not become available for a class I am on the wait-list for? The wait-lists are cleared and the names removed from the lists a few days before classes start. You will be notified by telephone if the list was cleared and you DID NOT get into the class. Therefore, it is very important that you provide the Registration and Records Office at (269) 782-1305 with a current telephone number.
- Will being placed on a wait-list check for prerequisites? No, not until you are actually registered for the class. You must make certain you have met the prerequisite(s) for the course prior to requesting to be placed on a wait-list. In addition, time conflicts also are not checked with being placed on a wait-list.
- Does being on a wait-list for a closed/full class guarantee me a seat in the class? No.
- What if I change my mind and want to be removed from a wait-list? Contact an Academic Support Advisor at (269) 782-1303.
- What happens if I am removed from a wait-list and want to get back onto the wait-list? If there is a seat available for the wait-list you will be placed in the next available wait-list place.
Class Cancellations
Southwestern Michigan College reserves the right to cancel any class in which the class enrollment does not have a sufficient number of students to warrant its continuation. If a class is cancelled for the term, students will automatically be refunded 100 percent of the tuition and course fees for the class.
If a class that you have registered for has been cancelled, every attempt to contact you by telephone will be made. Therefore, it is very important that you provide the Records and Registration Office at 269 782-1305 with a current telephone number.
