John Piechocki is an SMC automotive instructor with more than 20 years experience as a Ford Motor Co. technician. Piechocki won Ford’s comprehensive training program Service of Excellence Award, scoring in the top 10 percent nationally. He is also a certified Senior Master Technician through Ford.
Piechocki began teaching in the SMC Automotive Technology program in 2004. He is SMC alumni graduating with an associate in applied science degree in Automotive Technology. Piechocki, who is certified as a Michigan Master Automotive Technician, also has certification in the following areas from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence:
In addition, Piechocki has received numerous training certificates in automotive repairs from the General Motors Corp., as well as three other master technician certifications from Ford including engine, drivetrain and chassis. As an educator, Piechocki understands the importance of learning and strives to grow in his own knowledge of automotive technology to better help his students. He is always searching for new and inventive methods to improve the automotive curriculum. “I like the challenges of discovering how to reach each student’s particular learning style, interacting with students to make the learning environment enjoyable, and knowing what I do makes a positive influence in so many lives.” In his spare time, Piechocki likes to fish and do woodworking as a hobby. |

Thomas Rock Ruthsatz has been an instructor in Southwestern Michigan College’s Automotive Technology program since 2004. He earned his associate in applied science degree in Automotive Technology from SMC.
Prior to coming to SMC, Ruthsatz taught automotive technology for two years at River Valley High School. During the summer months when he is not teaching, Ruthsatz works at a high end import repair facility as an import automotive repair technician. His certifications include Automotive Service Excellence and Mercedes LMV, as well as being named Automotive Youth Excellence in Service mentor by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation for his work with high school students. Ruthsatz said he loves the interaction with SMC students and helping them get started in their career. “I believe that whatever you choose to do you should do it to the best of your abilities, this means I work hard and I play hard,” Ruthsatz said. “During the winter after long hours at the college, you can find me on the trails riding snowmobiles or skiing. During the summer, my evenings and weekends are spent at the lake on jet skis.” |
