Computer-Aided Drafting and Design Technology Overview

Southwestern Michigan College’s Computer-Aided Drafting and Design Technology program offers a one-year certificate or a two-year associate in applied science degree. The program, located at SMC’s Niles Area Campus, introduces students to the latest technology used in the prototype-design industry.

Students receive hands-on experience in SMC’s CADD lab, which has 20 workstations where students learn about industry-specific standards and practices. This enables students to gain real-world experience in design technology.

Students also benefit from the program’s cooperative internships program with regional employers. Graduates of the CADD program have found rewarding careers with some of the largest employers in the region.

The CADD program’s ProEngineer high-end engineering software equipment is used by CADD designers working in major industries, such as the Whirlpool Corp. The program allows students to develop a stronger discipline in their design skills.

In addition, the CADD lab offers the new Inventor 3D software which allows students to design work in multi-dimensional levels. The CADD program can be used as a stepping stone to an engineering degree for students who want to transfer to a four-year program.
