Construction Trades Technology Overview
The Construction Trades Technology program is a one-year certification (33 credits), which provides students with the technical skills necessary for the construction trades industry. Students are encouraged to take the Small Business Management course, a three-credit elective designed to introduce students to simple aspects of business management.
The Construction Trades Technology program is aligned with the national competency standards and trade specific skills according to the Michigan Residential Builder, Maintenance & Alteration Contractor License and local apprenticeship programs.

Area contractors and industry representatives can utilized SMC’s Construction Trades Technology program for apprenticeship training of their employees. In addition, students can benefit from internships with area companies, gaining additional on-the-job skills.
Graduates of the program will have learned how to build, inspect and repair structures, as well as effectively utilize trade specific tools and equipment. In addition, they learn how to read and understand blueprints and plans, and develop the ability to manage projects while controlling costs. Students will also develop a solid foundation in green technologies and practices related to construction.
Salary ranges vary according to geographical location as well as type of construction project. Generally, entry-level employment in the construction trades averages $35,000 to $45,000 annually.
