Steps to Becoming an SMC Student

This is only a guide. Each step needs to be completed. Once you’ve applied, you can begin the process of sending in your transcripts or GED verification, financial aid, testing, and registering for classes. To learn more about each step, click on the numbers below.

Step 1   Apply

Applications available on either campus and at swmich.edu/applynow. If visiting the college, call ahead for office hours.

Step 2   Schedule a Visit

Like to schedule a visit to see Southwestern Michigan College and meet with an admissions advisor? Simply complete our Schedule a Tour form and someone will contact you.

Step 3   Send Transcripts & ACT/SAT Scores

Request official transcripts or GED verification in writing from high school and/or previous college, as well as ACT or SAT scores.

Step 4   Complete Testing

To determine if you require placement testing, please call 800.456.8675, ext. 1499 and ask to speak to an Admissions Advisor. Testing takes about 2 ½ hours. Step 5   Determine Funding

Scholarships

Apply online for SMC scholarships. Go to swmich.edu/financialaid/scholarships.

Federal Financial Aid (FAFSA)

Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form. Apply at fafsa.ed.gov. SMC’s Federal School Code: 002317.

Self-Funded

Estimate amount needed/available.

Payment Plan (FACTS)

Contact the Business Office at 800.456.8675, ext. 1298 for details on a monthly payment plan or go to ‘My SMC Space’ on Wired and click on e-Bill for more information.

3rd Party

Review procedure and regulations with the business agency or other third party paying your expenses, such as an employer.

Step 6   Complete Registration

Meet with an Admissions Advisor to register for classes. Call 800.456.8675, ext. 1499. Walk-ins are welcome. Visit the Student Service Center in the David C. Briegel Building on the Dowagiac campus or at the Niles Campus.

Reminder

  • Ensure all financial aid paperwork is complete and funds are applied.
  • Check your SMC email and Wired account often.

Step 7   Obtain Bill & Schedule Online

To locate the bill will need to change: To view and print your bill, log on to SMC Wired and select the "My SMC Space" tab, then select the "Bill & Payment Center" icon.

Step 8   Buy Books

To purchase books, the bookstore requires you to bring a copy of your printed schedule or you can scan your student ID at the bookstore to electronically obtain your schedule. Financial aid recipients can go online at bookstore.swmich.edu to learn when financial aid may be used in the bookstore.
