MACRAO Agreement

In 1973 the Michigan Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (MACRAO) proposed the MACRAO Transfer Agreement. The MACRAO Transfer Agreement was created to simplify the transfer of students from one Michigan institution to another. The agreement stipulates that 30 semester credit hours of 100-level and above, compatible, general course work will be granted smooth transferability to participating Michigan universities. These credits will be applied toward a student's general education requirements at the four-year institution. Completion of requirements for the MACRAO Transfer Agreement does not necessarily mean that a student has fulfilled the requirements for a specific Southwestern Michigan College associate degree; to meet MACRAO a student will need to complete a minimum of 30 credits of which at least 3 credits are from an academic course taken at SMC; to meet graduation requirements for SMC's associate degrees a student will complete a minimum of 62 credit hours.

Students of Southwestern Michigan College graduating with an Associate of Arts or Science degree will automatically have the MACRAO Agreement Satisfied designation posted to their transcript. All other students who wish to have their transcript evaluated for the MACRAO Agreement Satisfied stamp must make a formal request. For additional information contact the Records and Registration Office at (269) 782-1351.

The basic 30 semester credit hours required to meet the MACRAO Transfer Agreement are:

English Composition 6 semester hours minimum
Science & Mathematics 8 semester hours minimum
Social Science 8 semester hours minimum
Humanities 8 semester hours minimum

Southwestern Michigan College has established a list of SMC courses under the four major distribution requirements for the MACRAO Transfer Agreement. The eight credits in each section must be taken in different areas; example: only one Art Course on the list below will count towards meeting MACRAO's Humanities requirements, if you had completed one of the Art courses listed below to meet MACRAO, you would need to select any other course listed except Art to complete the remaining required credit hours in the humanities section of MACRAO.

Note:

  1. Only courses in which at least a 2.0 is received may be applied to this agreement.
  2. Must choose from more than one area in each section, with exception to English, to fulfill MACRAO requirements.
  3. Though a course with a grade of D may count toward MACRAO at SMC, that does not mean that the receiving institution will grant credit for the D (contact the receiving institution to verify if credit will be awarded).
