Teaching and Learning Centers

The Teaching and Learning Centers at Southwestern Michigan College are dedicated to helping students achieve academic success by providing a place where students can receive free:

• Learning Style Assessments
• Career Planning
• Test-taking tips
• Writing Assistance
• Tutoring

There are three Teaching and Learning Centers at SMC – two on the Dowagiac campus and one at the Niles Area Campus.

On the Dowagiac campus, the main TLC is located in Room 1105 of the College Services Building and the other is in the Fred L. Mathews Library. Both the Mathews Library and the Niles Area Campus TLC’s are open to the public. The TLC in the College Services Building is reserved for only SMC students, faculty and staff.

Each TLC is equipped with a large variety of computer software and resources to assist students in learning. Follow the link for the appropriate TLC on our Computer Labs page to view the wide variety of software available in each TLC. Skill-building workshops are offered throughout each semester.

The goal of the TLC’s is to provide an area in which students can study, relax, and take advantage of the modern computer labs in a comfortable atmosphere. Beverages are allowed in all of the TLC’s.

SMC’s Teaching and Learning Center staff are members of the Michigan Writing Centers Association, the National Association for Developmental Education (NADE) and the National College Learning Center Association.
