Become a SMC tutor
Southwestern Michigan College tutors go through a careful application process. Each tutor completes 15 hours of training on 18 different topics established by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) and then they must complete 25 hours of contact time with students before they can be certified as a Level 1 tutor.
The SMC tutoring program is a certifying agency for all three CRLA levels which are regular, advanced and master. A master certification means a tutor has completed 35 hours of training and 75 hours of direct tutoring.
SMC tutors must have recommendations from two faculty members and a grade point average (GPA) of 3.33 or above. In addition, prospective tutors must have received at least a ‘B+’ grade in the subject they would like to tutor.
It is also recommended that the prospective tutor complete one semester at SMC before applying to be a tutor, so that they will have a feeling of SMC as a whole.
While having good communication skills and the willingness to continually improve those skills are important, the potential tutor should have a strong desire to assist other students to academically succeed.
Prospective tutors should be a role model for other students. SMC peer tutors are not only strong students, but are also genuinely motivated to benefit their fellow students by helping them learn, and by helping them to develop independence as learners.
