About the Creative Writing Degree
Creative writing is more than an art form. Considering all the messages with which we are constantly bombarded, it has never been more important to know how to break through the clutter, assess meaning, and craft messages that resonate. Creative writers have a grasp on both the technical and artful components of literature, as well as the critical thinking skills to analyze and employ rhetoric to interpret and convey various levels of meaning.
The creative writing program at SMC will help you develop all those skills through courses in everything from creative fiction and non-fiction writing to ethnic literature. After foundational courses that build your writing skills, you’ll examine diverse literary texts from historical to contemporary British, American, and American Ethnic authors, exploring movements, themes, literary techniques, and cultural elements. You’ll also try out new techniques, refine your skills, and develop your unique voice in fiction, non-fiction, and poetry workshop-based courses. As you develop your expertise as a writer and literary savant, you’ll also take the general education courses required by most degree programs so that you can transfer ready to dive into the courses you care about. You’ll graduate eager to explore and debate literature at the university level and confident in your skills as a writer.
The associate in arts in creative writing is a two-year degree designed to transfer to four-year schools for a bachelor’s degree in creative writing or related fields. -
