Dual Enrollment Honors Opportunities

The Honors Program was designed to give high-achieving students the opportunity for advanced study in their chosen curriculum with one-on-one guidance from experienced faculty. Students who participate in the Honors Program prove that they have the aptitude and determination to perform above and beyond the call of duty and are highly attractive to employers and major universities. Read more about the Honors Program here.

SMC provides two ways for dual enrolled students to participate in the Honors Program.

Honors Program—Dual-enrolled Track

The dual-enrolled track of the Honors Program is essentially early admittance to the regular Honors Program. Students may enroll in Honors sections of SMC classes and take part in Honors activities. Students are expected to be active in their high schools the same way that traditional Honors students are active in the SMC community. Courses are concentrated on the Dowagiac campus.

Dual-enrolled students must…

  • Be a high school senior
  • Have dual enrolled at SMC for at least one year
  • Have at least a 3.5 GPA for 12+ credits at 100 level or above
  • Not require any transitional or developmental courses such as Math 101

How to Apply

Dual Enrollment Honors Academy

The Dual Enrollment Honors Academy (DEHA) is an extension of the Honors Program for the Niles Campus. It differs from the dual-enrolled track of the Honors Program in that students follow a set curriculum for two years (junior and senior year) and are in a cohort with other Honors Academy students. All classes are taught by Honors faculty, and one class each semester is run as an Honors class. Due to the structure of the DEHA, a limited number of seats are available each year.

Students who complete the DEHA may earn an Associate in Science from SMC by staying at SMC for just one more year. Students who continue with SMC receive automatic entrance into the Honors Program. They will have already completed enough Honors credits to graduate with the Honors Program, but will need to be active in other areas of the program (service events, etc.). They are welcome to take additional Honors classes as well.

The DEHA curriculum is designed to be highly transfer-friendly with top-tier universities.
