About Residence Life at SMC

Mission

Residence Life is an essential element of the Southwestern Michigan College total college-life experience.  Our mission is to foster communities that transform student lives through purposeful and creative programs, practices and services provided in a safe, residential environment.

Student Employment

SMC employs a number of students across campus, and many in the Department of Residence Life. Students may apply to become an RA or front desk assistant. See below for detailed information about each position. Click here to browse all student job openings and to apply.

Resident Assistants

The resident assistant (RA) facilitates the social, academic and personal adjustment of students to the residence hall and college. The RA develops a sense of community among residents as members of a floor, residents of a hall and active participants in the Residence Life system. The RA serves as a positive role model to residents and peer staff members. The RA enforces the rules and policies of Residence Life and the college.

Desk Assistants

The desk assistant (DA) is the first point of contact for students, staff, faculty and visitors seeking assistance for residence hall issues and/or campus information. Desk assistants are under the direct supervision of the residence hall manager for each respective building. The primary duties of the desk assistant are to provide receptionist services and the first–line of emergency response at the 24-hour front desk.

Student Custodians

The student custodian will perform a variety of custodial, groundskeeping and light maintenance work which may include but is not limited to cleaning bathrooms, sweeping, mopping and using vacuum cleaners to clean floors; washing walls, windows and fixtures; emptying trash receptacles and picking up debris; pulling weeds and assisting with room set-up/take-down for college facilities. Other duties may be assigned by the director of residence life or residence hall managers.

Meet the Resident Assistants

Alyssa Mast

Hi! My name is Alyssa, or you can call me Aly! I currently live in the small town of Eau Claire, Michigan but was born and raised in Baroda, Michigan. I graduated from Lakeshore High School and then decided to attend Southwestern Michigan College to receive my associate degree and continue on through the Ferris program. Currently, I am going to be a junior in college and just received my associate degree in elementary education. I am now working towards my bachelor’s degree in elementary education and double minoring in mathematics and English through Ferris. Meanwhile, when I don’t have my faced stuffed in textbooks, I enjoy riding four wheelers, hiking, art, traveling, movies and hanging out with friends and family.

As an RA, I am looking forward to getting to know everyone and creating new friendships and bonds between the residents as well as the other RA’s. I am extremely excited to be an RA this year, and I look forward to helping students have a great college experience and have fun while doing so!

Cameron Victor

My name is Cameron Victor, and I am from Coldwater, MI. I am currently enrolled in the MSU agricultural technology program to study agribusiness. With this degree I plan to one day start a career in crop insurance or deal in ag-based financing. If you can't find me on campus, usually I'm working on a project in the greenhouse or traveling the state with Collegiate Farm Bureau. As a RA, I look forward to seeing everyone grow and get closer to their dreams.

Harleigh Besaw

Hi everyone, my name is Harleigh Besaw, and I graduated from Edwardsburg High School (the one with the really good football team). This is my second year at SMC, and I recently decided on a communications major; I still don’t know what I’m going to be, but that’s okay! After I graduate, I plan to transfer to somewhere in Colorado.

I love to keep myself busy with work, school, friends and working out. Some fun facts about me are: I don’t have a favorite animal or color or song because I like all of them. I do love English, and I’m terrible at math. I’ve been told I’m very easy to talk to, so don’t be shy this year!

Jarod Siguenza

Hey everyone! My name is Jarod Siguenza, and I am from Edwardsburg, Michigan. I am currently majoring in mathematics so I can become a high school teacher. At the moment, I am planning on transferring to Western to pursue my bachelor’s. I am looking forward to being an RA for this school year! I hope to build great friendships with you all!

Justice Langford

Hi! My name is Justice Langford; I come from a small town named Clio, Michigan, about three hours northeast of SMC, and graduated from Clio High School. I am currently enrolled here studying communications, and this will be my second year here. After graduating from SMC, I plan to transfer to Central Michigan University to earn my degree in broadcast and cinematic arts with a minor in leadership, to further become a news anchor.

I am very excited to be an RA this year, and I look forward to getting to know and helping all of you along the way! Make it a great year or not, the choice is yours.

Katie Thurston

Hi guys! I’m Kathryn, but you can call me Katie. I’m from Kalamazoo, and I have three older brothers, including my twin brother, Ben, who also attends SMC. I graduated from Mattawan High School in 2019. I am majoring in health sciences and hoping to become a registered nurse in my future.

I love watching medical dramas, and I love all types of music. My hobbies include hanging out with my friends, going out to eat, painting and binge-watching Netflix when I can. I also work in White Hall’s front desk so if you see me don’t be scared to say hi. I love meeting new people and am an ally for anyone who needs me. I’m really excited to start off the fall semester with new faces!

Mia Clay

Hi, my name is Tamia, but please call me Mia. I am from Benton Harbor, Michigan and a 2019 graduate from Benton Harbor High School. I am currently studying communications in hope of creating my own career label and path. I enjoy rapping, dancing, painting, traveling and hanging out with friends.

Being an RA will equip me with better communication skills and allow me to put my current communication skills to the test. I look forward to building more and new memories with everyone. Can't wait to meet and get to know you all!!

Morgan Hoard

My name is Morgan Hoard; I am from Coldwater, Michigan but graduated from Bronson High School. This is my second year at SMC. I am currently majoring in accounting and will be enrolling in the Ferris State University program here at SMC to receive my bachelor’s degree. My goal after college is to become a financial advisor. My hobbies include playing tennis, board games, music, anything to do with animals and spending time with friends and family.

I am very excited to be an RA and am looking forward to getting to know the new and returning residents. My goal is to help the residents have the best year possible and to be a friend that they can confide in. College is where a lot of people find their voice and figure out the person they want to be. I am excited to have the opportunity to help residents find themselves and to have a positive impact in their lives and on the campus. I can’t wait to get residents involved on campus and to have an amazing year with you all!
