Residence Life is an essential element of the Southwestern Michigan College total college-life experience. Our mission is to foster communities that transform student lives through purposeful and creative programs, practices and services provided in a safe, residential environment.
SMC employs a number of students across campus, and many in the Department of Residence Life. Students may apply to become an RA or front desk assistant. See below for detailed information about each position. Click here to browse all student job openings and to apply.
The resident assistant (RA) facilitates the social, academic and personal adjustment of students to the residence hall and college. The RA develops a sense of community among residents as members of a floor, residents of a hall and active participants in the Residence Life system. The RA serves as a positive role model to residents and peer staff members. The RA enforces the rules and policies of Residence Life and the college.

Desk assistants are under the direct supervision of the residence hall manager for each respective building. The primary duties of the desk assistant are to provide receptionist services and the first–line of emergency response at the 24-hour front desk.
The student custodian will perform a variety of custodial, groundskeeping and light maintenance work which may include but is not limited to cleaning bathrooms, sweeping, mopping and using vacuum cleaners to clean floors; washing walls, windows and fixtures; emptying trash receptacles and picking up debris; pulling weeds and assisting with room set-up/take-down for college facilities. Other duties may be assigned by the director of residence life or residence hall managers.

A little about myself: I graduated/am from Hartford, Michigan. My hobbies include cheering, listening to music, dancing and hanging out with friends. As an RA, I look forward to meeting everyone! I am always here if anyone needs someone to talk to. Let’s have a great year!
My name is Cameron Victor, and I am from Coldwater, MI. I am currently enrolled in the MSU agricultural technology program to study agribusiness. With this degree I plan to one day start a career in crop insurance or deal in ag-based financing. If you can't find me on campus, usually I'm working on a project in the greenhouse or traveling the state with Collegiate Farm Bureau. As a RA, I look forward to seeing everyone grow and get closer to their dreams.
Hey everyone! My name is Carly, and this is my second year attending SMC. I am so incredibly excited to be a RA for some amazing students this year. I am from a small town called Middleville and graduated from Thornapple Kellogg High School. Some of my many interests include traveling, bowling, swimming, music, dance, makeup/art and hanging out with my friends. Some fun facts about me include that I play the clarinet/participated in color guard and anyone could tell you I’m in love with sunflowers and the color yellow.
I am majoring in business and plan on sticking with my associate degree to help me land a job while deciding where to go from there. I have many passions, so I love taking life day by day to see what I may want to establish for myself going forward. I have to say one of the many things that drew me to this small college is that it felt like home, and I enjoy how close people are to one another. I’m hoping I can establish a great relationship with each one of you, and I’m looking forward to a great year with you all!
My name is Coralynn Hellenthal. I am from Holland, Michigan. This is my second year at SMC, and I'm working towards an Associate in Arts Criminal Justice. As a RA I enjoy getting to meet so many different people and having the chance to bond with residents throughout the year. My goal is to be a RA students feel comfortable talking to if they need and someone that makes a positive impact in their lives.
Hey all! My name is Dani, and I’m from California. I’m currently a nursing student and plan on getting my BSN at IUSB.

As a RA for the 2019-2020 school year, I look forward to meeting all of the new residents and seeing the returning ones as well! I hope to be someone that all residents feel comfortable coming to and confiding in whenever needed. Let’s have a fun and wonderful year!

I am also president of the SMC eSports Club, so if you have an interest in that feel free to let me know. If you don't know how to talk to me or are worried about small talk, lead with that, and I'm sure we'll find something in common. I have an ESA ferret named Sven. Feel free to ask to see him; he loves meeting new people. I love animals, especially dogs. I have three dogs back at home and two more ferrets back at home as well.
