In 2009, Jimmy Hatch led a military operation to rescue Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, who had deserted his unit and been captured by the Taliban. Hatch lost his leg in the mission, and a military dog also died while helping to expose the enemy. Following the injury that ended his nearly 26-year career, Hatch founded Spike's K9 Fund, which provides protective equipment and medical assistance to K9s.

Hatch’s story has been featured in the news numerous times, including two features on Anderson Cooper 360.

Hatch will bring his inspiring message to SMC on September 14. The public is invited to hear him speak at 7 p.m. in the theatre in the Student Activity Center.
