SMC 3D design students create art from old computer parts

“I’m proud of the creativity of our students,” SMC President Dr. David Mathews said, “and that the academic side is working with Computing Services to turn old parts into imaginative art instead of adding to a landfill.”

He maintained a 3.84 grade-point average while carrying 21 credit hours.

Dowagiac City Councilwoman Danielle Lucas was announced as Southwestern Michigan College’s Staff Member of the Year for her performance in the Financial Aid office.

Nursing's Rona Goodrich wins fulltime Faculty of Year

Honored as Adjunct Faculty of the Year was mathematics instructor Melinda Wall of Vandalia.

Abigail Craft receives math/science award

Craft, who has been very involved in the Honors Program as well as STEM Club, is interested in transferring to Western Michigan University after finishing at SMC.

College complements community

SMC President Dr. David Mathews created the gospel service in 2003. Mathews’ weekly visits help him stay connected with nursing students and the Cass County community; he taught himself how to play the guitar with help from SMC instructor Mike Davis.

Art award winners announced

SMC alumna Jessika Clement, whose paintings were featured in a February solo exhibition and are part of the college’s permanent collection, helped to judge the work. She has lived in Grand Rapids since graduating from Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University. Clement, from Edwardsburg, graduated from SMC in 2014, and some of her work will debut this fall at ArtPrize.

SMC, IUSB tackle Earth Day together

SMC’s crew of 18, including Honors Program Co-Advisors Mark Pelfrey and Gary Franchy and science faculty presenters Deirdre Kurtis and Donna Courtney, enjoyed a beautiful sunny day. The idea for this collaborative celebration of the Earth and service came from conversations between Franchy and Pelfrey and IUSB Honors Program Director Dr. Neovi Karakatsanis, who welcomed participants along with IUSB Chancellor Terry Allison.
