The Southwestern Michigan College Board of Trustees Dec. 19 recognized Chairman Thomas F. Jerdon of Dowagiac for 25 years of service.
Jerdon, who joined the SMC board in December 1991, is vice president of Jerdon Real Estate in Silver Creek Township.
The family-owned firm was established in 1950 by his grandfather, the late Floyd Jerdon Sr.
The company has specialized in marketing and selling lake and farm properties in the region for almost seven decades and is the oldest real estate firm in the area.
Jerdon received his Michigan real estate license in 1982, his real estate broker’s license in 1984 and was a licensed real estate appraiser in Michigan for 15 years.
As a real estate developer, Jerdon in 1997 created Villamere Condominiums at the east edge of Dowagiac. The single-family residential development contains 24 villa homes.
Jerdon is a 1986 graduate of Grand Valley State University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the school’s accredited Seidman College of Business. He is a 1984 Phi Theta Kappa SMC graduate and a 1982 Dowagiac Union High School honors graduate.
SMC’s Sigma Psi Chapter of PTK recently recognized his 32-year membership in the international honor society for community colleges by bestowing a Competitive Edge Five Star Pin, reserved for achieving advanced skills in communication, professional etiquette, team-building and critical thinking.
Jerdon, who also serves on the SMC Foundation Board of Directors, was the first president of Dowagiac’s Dogwood Fine Arts Festival.
Jerdon has also served on the St. Joseph-Benton Harbor Chemical Bank Board of Directors, the Southwestern Michigan Tourist Council Board of Directors and the Indian Lake Dredge Project Inc. as treasurer.
Jerdon served as treasurer of the SMC board from 2003 until becoming chairman in 2015.
He and his wife, Jodi, also an SMC graduate, have two daughters, Ella and Anna.
“My admiration for Southwestern Michigan College runs extremely deep,” Jerdon said. “My wife, my two sisters and myself are all SMC graduates. SMC produced a career nurse, a teacher, an IT engineer and me. Serving SMC and its taxpayers has been the best part of my professional life. SMC is about transforming lives.
