Greater Dowagiac Chamber of Commerce honored Dr. Joseph Odenwald, incoming eighth president of Southwestern Michigan College, at its Annual Dinner and Celebration of Members Oct. 30 at Elks Lodge 889 before more than 125 people.
Odenwald, currently SMC’s Vice President of Student Services, was presented the Partnership Award by President Kim MacGregor, who said he has become an essential go-to person for the Chamber.
“When we needed more help with security for the parade, we called Joe,” MacGregor said. “He put us in touch with a staff member who got us eight volunteers. When we had a business that was closing, we called Joe. He put together leads for staffing. Joe also began bringing students to town, encouraging a closer relationship between the college and our community.”
The Chamber also recognized Lifestyle Nutrition owner Angie Johnson, Wounded Minnow owner Kyle Belew, Dowagiac Union Schools and Domestic and Sexual Assault Services (DASAS).
Keynote speakers were Steve Winchester and Andy Jackson of the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians.
