Southwestern Michigan College’s Ryan Peterson repeated as a gold medal winner in the criminal justice contest at the SkillsUSA-Michigan Skills and Leadership Conference in Grand Rapids April 14-16.
“Ryan is the first two-time winner in the event from SMC,” according to Criminal Justice Program Director Donald Ricker.
Peterson, of South Haven, plans on joining the Michigan State Police after SMC.
“Next year I will be back as an RA (resident assistant in housing) and to finish my criminal justice degree and, hopefully, win another gold medal at SkillsUSA,” he said. “I have a State Police Cadet position lined up for summer. Going forward, my plan is to be in the academy by the summer of 2024.”
As a campus job, Peterson works under Director of Campus Security and Student Conduct Lyndon Parrish, who retired from almost 27 years with the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.
Peterson also hopes to keep his trombone as part of his future.
“I plan on playing for SMC again next year,” said the musician with both the Symphonic Band and the Jazz Ensemble.
