Steps to Becoming an SMC Student

Step 1

Apply

APPLY FOR ADMISSIONS

Fill out the free application at swmich.edu/applynow or pick one up at either campus. Send your official high school transcripts or GED verification, ACT/SAT scores and all transcripts to Admissions.

Merit Scholarships

After you have applied and your transcripts are received, you are automatically considered for academic merit-based scholarships. You will be notified if you received any.

APPLY FOR HOUSING

If you want to live on campus, turn in your housing application and deposit as early as possible to reserve your room. Go to swmich.edu/housing for more information.

DOWNLOAD THE SMC MOBILE APP

Search your app store for SMC Wired Mobile or Southwestern Michigan College. The app gives you access to SMC Wired right on your smart phone.

Step 2

Financial Aid

APPLY FOR TALENT AWARDS AND ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS

Talent awards are based on demonstrated proficiency in areas such as art, music, writing and industrial skills. Endowed scholarships have various criteria such as degree program, financial need, residency and ethnicity. Visit swmich.edu/financialaid/scholarship-application to apply. Please apply early.

APPLY FOR OUTSIDE SCHOLARSHIPS

SMC accepts scholarships from outside sources. A list of private scholarships is available at swmich.edu/financialaid/private. You can also search the web to find scholarships for which you are eligible. Check with your school counselor or local area for more scholarships.

FILL OUT THE FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID (FAFSA)

The FAFSA is available beginning Jan. 1 at fafsa.ed.gov. SMC’s Federal School Code is 002317. This form determines your financial need and is required for most scholarships.

Step 3

Registration

COMPLETE TESTING

Speak with an Admissions Advisor to determine if you need to take placement tests. Testing needs are based off ACT and SAT scores. Testing is conducted in reading, writing and math. Each test takes about one hour and walk-ins are welcome. For more information visit swmich.edu/admissions/testing.

REGISTER FOR CLASSES

Call or stop by the Student Service Center on either campus to meet with an Admissions Advisor and register for classes. Fall registration begins in the first part of April. Spring registration begins at the end of October and Summer registration starts around the middle of March.

Step 4

Next Steps

CHECK YOUR EMAIL AND SMC WIRED

All campus announcements and reminders will be posted on Wired or sent to your SMC email. This is the best way to stay up to date with SMC events and your financial aid status. As a reminder, your first bill will be sent to your SMC email.

PAY YOUR BILL

Reminder: Ensure all financial aid paperwork is complete and funds are applied. Log into the Bill and Payment Center in Wired to view and pay your bill or set up a payment plan.

Visit swmich.edu/business-office/student-accounts-policy to view additional options to pay for college.

BUY BOOKS

Buy books at the bookstore on the Dowagiac campus. You will need your class schedule to get your books. You can print it off at the bookstore, but to save time print it out ahead of time or access it on your smartphone. You will also need to bring your ID if you plan to use financial aid to buy books.
