Steps to Becoming an SMC Student

Note: International students should follow the steps on the international students page.

Step 1     Apply for Admission

Fill out the free application at or pick one up at either campus.

Step 2     Send Transcripts and Test Scores

Request that transcripts from your high school and all colleges you have attended be sent to SMC. Also send your SAT/ACT scores and GED verification, if applicable.

If you haven’t graduated yet, send us your preliminary transcripts now so that we can move you through the process. We’ll need your final, official transcripts after you graduate.

High school transcripts should be sent to ATTN: Admissions, Southwestern Michigan College, 58900 Cherry Grove Road, Dowagiac, MI 49047.

College transcripts should be sent to ATTN: Records, Southwestern Michigan College, 58900 Cherry Grove Road, Dowagiac, MI 49047.

Step 3     Take Placement Tests

Depending on your SAT/ACT scores, you may need to take placement tests in reading, writing and/or math. Ask your admissions advisor if you need to take placement tests.

Step 4     Register for Classes

You must meet with an admissions advisor (in person or over the phone) to schedule your first semester of classes. Call or stop by the Student Service Center on either campus to chat with an advisor and register for classes.

Step 5     Pay Your Bill

Make sure you pay in full or sign up for a payment plan by the due date to avoid being dropped from classes.

Buy Books

Buy books at the bookstore on the Dowagiac campus. You will need your class schedule to get your books. Print it off ahead of time or plan to access it on your smartphone. You will also need to bring your ID if you plan to use financial aid to buy books.

Check Your SMC Email and SMC Wired

All campus announcements and reminders will sent to your SMC email or posted to Wired, SMC online student portal. Checking these frequently is the best way to stay up-to-date with SMC events and your financial aid status. As a reminder, your first bill will be sent to your SMC email.
