Steps to Becoming an SMC Student

Note: International students should follow the steps on the international students page.

Step 1     Apply for Admission

Fill out the free application at or pick one up at either campus.

Step 2     Send Your SAT/ACT Scores (if you've taken either test)

Log in to your SAT or ACT account and request that your scores be sent to SMC.

Step 3     Chat With An Advisor

Talk to an advisor to discuss your academic plan and to sign up for an orientation session.

Step 4     Take Placement Tests (if needed)

The need for placement tests is determined by your SAT/ACT scores. Ask an advisor if you need to take placement tests. If you have not taken the SAT or ACT, you will need to take placement tests. You can come in for placement testing any time, or you can test at New Student Orientation.

Step 5     Attend New Student Orientation

Attend orientation to learn about academic policies and campus resources, meet faculty and staff, receive advising and register for classes.

Step 6     Send Us Your Transcripts

We'll need final, official transcripts from your high school and any colleges you've attended. Work with your high school counselor and/or college records office to have transcripts sent to SMC at 58900 Cherry Grove Road, Dowagiac, MI 49047. High school transcripts should be sent ATTN: Admissions. College transcripts should be sent ATTN: Records.

Step 7     Pay Your Bill

Pay your bill or enroll in a payment plan by the payment deadline to avoid being dropped from all your classes. Learn more about billing and payment.

Apply for Scholarships

Buy Books

Buy books at the bookstore on the Dowagiac campus. You will need your class schedule to get your books. Print it off ahead of time or plan to access it on your smartphone. You will also need to bring your ID if you plan to use financial aid to buy books.

Check Your SMC Email and SMC Wired

All campus announcements and reminders will sent to your SMC email or posted to Wired, SMC's online student portal. Checking these frequently is the best way to stay up-to-date with SMC events and your financial aid status. As a reminder, your first bill will be sent to your SMC email.
