Course Description
Prerequisite: Minimum grade of C in ENGL 115, ENGL 103W, ENGL 103, or ENGL 104, or English placement test score (Level 2 or higher). Concurrent enrollment in ENGL 115 allowed. This course serves as an introduction to the field of special education. The content is anchored to historical context and current federal and state legislation. An emphasis is on applying legislated mandates to practical implementation across educational settings, including instructional strategies. This course is designed to facilitate pre-service teachers in developing the skills of planning and problem-solving to deliver effective, strength-based learning experiences in intentional learning environments. Topics include: Federal and State legislation, IFSP and IEP elements, specific category eligibility, continuum of services (LRE) universal design for instruction, inclusive practices, person-first language and practices, and anti-bias education. This course aligns to MDE standards for teacher preparation and the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Professional Standards, Competencies ECE I and II.
